The Marking App
How the AI grades your comments and helps you improve them.
Every comment is automatically graded when it's saved. The AI evaluates whether the comment is specific, actionable, and written in a way the student can actually act on. Grades appear as an icon in the options menu of each comment row:
Good - the comment is clear, specific, and actionable.
Needs work - the comment could be more specific or better structured.
Poor - the comment is too vague, generic, or unlikely to help the student improve.
When a comment is graded Poor, the options menu icon changes to a warning circle so it's visible without opening the menu.
Open the options menu and choose Feedback to see the AI's assessment. The dialog shows:
The overall grade.
A plain-language explanation of what specifically needs improving.
Options to Edit Comment or Rewrite with AI.
Click Rewrite with AI to generate an improved version of your comment. The rewrite aims to:
Use second person ("you") so the student feels addressed directly.
Describe what went wrong, why it matters, and what to do about it.
Stay concise - rewrites are capped at 120 words.
Where the original comment is missing a specific detail (the student's actual
answer, the correct value, a next step), the rewrite inserts an [insert "…"] marker. Review the suggested text, fill in any markers, and click Apply Rewrite to save it. The AI re-grades the comment after
saving.
Tip: Rather than applying the rewrite verbatim, use it as a starting point. The AI will flag what's missing; you fill in the specifics that only you know about the assignment.
You can request AI feedback at any time from the options menu, even if the comment was saved before AI grading was introduced or if no badge is currently showing. Choose Feedback from the menu - if no grade exists yet, the app will fetch one.
Note: AI grading and AI rewrites require a paid plan. The comment bank and all copy/edit/delete features work on the free plan without restriction.
